Area Rugs

or

Many area rugs require cleaning procedures and products that differ from typical wall to wall carpet cleaning.  Reasons for this tend to vary due to the sensitivity of the fibers and colors used in the design of area rugs.

Orientals, Persians, Indians:
Are often hand made by weaving or knotting techniques.  Orientals are most commonly made in the Far East or Middle East.  There are many
"Oriental" imitation like rugs on the market  that will still require special handling when cleaning.

Dhurrie, Kilim, Navajo Rugs:
Can be made from wool, cotton or even silk fibers.
Dhurries are commonly made in India woven in cotton and sometimes contain wool.
Kilims are like Dhurries but are made primarily in Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Eastern European countries.  Kilims are traditionally woven in wool and sometimes contain cotton.  Both Dhurries and Kilims are reversible.
Navajo rugs are made in the Southwestern U.S. and made from wool.

Sisal Rugs:
The fibers in a true Sisal rug comes from a cactus plant called Sisalana, which grows in Brazil or some parts of Mexico.  Other fibers used in Sisal can include jute, hemp, mountain or sea grasses.  Sisal is a natural fiber that is very durable, hypoallergenic, biodegradable, non-static, and naturally durable.  Water can cause shrinkage so it is very important to keep these types of rugs away from any water source.  Vacuum sisal rugs regularly to remove soil.

Braid rugs:
Made from heavy wool rug yarns and can sometimes be made of synthetic fibers such as Olefin; an extremely durable fiber.

Flokati Rugs:
Thick, fluffy (sheep fur) with long fibers that can extends up to 5"-6".  Hand made in Greece of 100% New Zealand Wool.

Rag Rugs:
These are hand woven rugs, usually made of wool or cotton.  The bright dyes used to add color to Rag Rugs can run if not cleaned properly.

As you can see, many area rugs are made of natural or a combination of natural and synthetic fibers.  You can compare the cleaning of a fine wool suit or coat, or even a cotton blouse or dress shirt, to the cleaning of a fine area rug.  By making this simple comparison you can understand why special attention is needed in the cleaning process of fine area rugs.
